Keeping your Cool…

Many existing standard AC systems we see in homes are 10 SEER. It wasn’t too long ago when 8 SEER was the norm. Today however modern AC systems are available up to 20 SEER and even higher.

What is SEER?

SEER is the acronym for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The SEER rating of an AC unit is a measure of the cooling output (in BTU’s) for a normal cooling season divided by the total electric energy input (in Watts) during the same (period of time) normal cooling season.

In simple terms: The higher the SEER rating means the more energy efficient the system is.

What is an AC System?

You may hear or see the terms ‘unit’ and ‘system’ used interchangeably when someone is referring to an AC. Many folks think of the outside ‘Condensing Unit’ as their AC and forget there is an indoor ‘Evaporator Coil Unit’ also.

Together, the combined condensing unit linked (via the insulated copper refrigerant lineset) to the evaporator coil unit is the AC system. Technically, you could add the (furnace) blower and air distribution ducting to complete the AC system since those are how the cool air is delivered to each room.

Typically when an AC system is replaced, the condensing unit, insulated copper refrigerant lineset and the evaporator coil are replaced but not the (furnace) blower or any of the air distribution ducting.

AC Replacement Cost vs Savings

The cost of replacing your AC system will be directly affected by the SEER rating of the system you select to replace your old existing system. We’re happy to visit your home and provide a free replacement estimate.

Roughly speaking in very general terms, replacing a 3-ton, 10 SEER system in the Chicago area with a 3-ton, 13 SEER system could save up to $2,000 in energy operating cost over the average useful equipment lifespan of about 20 years. In these same general terms, replacing a 3-ton, 10 SEER system in the Chicago area with a 3-ton 16 SEER system could save up to $2500 in energy operating cost over the average useful equipment lifespan of about 20 years.

There may be rebates and or Air-Smart discounts available that will add to these savings when replacing your system.
